According to Oleksiy Neizhpapa, Commander of the Ukrainian Navy, maritime drones struck gas platforms occupied by Russia near the coast of Crimea in the Black Sea. “Maritime drones of the naval units carried out targeted attacks on Russian assets.
Enemy surveillance systems installed on seized gas platforms near the temporarily occupied Crimea were eliminated,” Neizhpapa stated.

The targeted platforms, originally used for gas and oil extraction, were seized by Russia in 2015 and repurposed for military use. They served as helipads and hosted Russian radar and surveillance systems.

The destruction of these assets represents a significant blow to Russia’s defense infrastructure in the Black Sea.

Tactical Innovation with “Drone Ships”

The operation marked the debut of Ukraine’s “drone ships,” warships equipped with FPV attack drones, which functioned as autonomous attack platforms. This innovative technology expands the capabilities of Ukraine’s unmanned maritime systems, demonstrating progress in the combined use of maritime and aerial drones.

Bayraktar TB2 in a Reconnaissance Role

The attacks were overseen by Turkish-made Bayraktar TB2 drones. While previously recognized for their effectiveness in offensive missions, in this operation, the Bayraktars were primarily used for reconnaissance, ensuring the precision of the maritime drones during the attacks.

Escalation in the Black Sea

The attack reflects a new Ukrainian strategy combining unmanned systems to target high-value assets in Russian-occupied areas. This approach underscores Ukraine’s increasing reliance on advanced technology to address military challenges, marking an escalation in the tactics employed in the conflict.
